Exotac fire starting tools utilize a proprietary alloy of rare earth metals called ferrocerium. By gradual use, the ferrocerium rod becomes smaller and therefore depreciated. Luckily, most of the Exotac fire starters offers replaceable ferro rod, which ensures long - term sustainability. A new rod can be purchased in the fireROD™ Refill Kits. 

How does ferrocerium rod works

When a ferrocerium rod (which usually includes metals such as Iron, Cerium and Magnesium) is rapidly scraped, the friction created ignites the shavings producing molten globulars of burning metal. It is these long-burning molten parts of metal that make a ferrocerium fire starter so effective at catching other materials afire.

Easy to replace 

Thanks to the unified thread, the replacement is very easy. Simply unscrew the rod and screw in the new rod. The package includes a 2.4" long 5/16" threaded replacement rod and one extra o-ring. One rod lasts up to 10,000 fire-starting strikes.
