According to forecasts, it looks like this year's main mushroom season will start in September. The Czechs, as a renowned nation of mushroom pickers, are already eagerly sharpening their mushroom knives. But wait... what does such a mushroom knife actually look like? What criteria should it meet? Read on and be a pro in the woods this fall.
You can take basically anything with you to a mushroom picking. From a good old-fashioned fish shaped pocket knife to a regular kitchen knife to an outdoor survival knife. Still, it would be a shame to limit yourself to any random "frog sticker" you can find at home.
While a fish shaped knife or a classic folding knife are among the better options, a large and heavy knife will not do the trick. Such a knife won't allow you to do the delicate work that your mushrooms deserve.
But there are slightly more suitable options, you just need to follow a few basic criteria when choosing. In addition to a basket and rubber boots, a good knife is an essential part of a mushroom picker's equipment.
There is no such thing. Because everyone likes something different. Some prefer curved, some prefer straight blades. Some have a solid construction, some have a folding structure. And someone will put up with various mushroom gadgets. There are really many variants and types of knives, and a mushroom knife is already quite a specific thing. Therefore, we will try to simplify your search.
The ideal mushroom knife probably doesn't exist, but there are a few criteria to follow.
A mushroom knife is often a poor thing - we only take care of it when we need it. That's why we recommend a knife that is made of high-quality stainless steel. And that's mainly so that it doesn't rust in one season.
A mushroom knife should be smaller and lighter. Remember, you are not going to cut down the forest, but to do fine work. The optimum blade length is 4-9 cm and can be straight or slightly curved. It is easier to trim wormy parts with one of these. The knife should not be unnecessarily large and heavy and should be easy for the mushroom picker to hold and handle.
Mushrooms grow in damp conditions, so be aware that you will be working with the knife in damp conditions or in wet conditions. Therefore, it is a good idea to make sure that the handle of the knife fits perfectly and your hand does not slip. Good texture is essential. You won't go wrong with rubberized handle.
We'll leave this part up to you. A fixed blade is bigger, takes up more space, but has a wider range of uses. To eliminate the risk of injury, always keep your knife in its sheath.
The foldable knife can be easily put in your pocket, but it can get quite dirty when picking and cleaning mushrooms. That's why you need to think about more consistent care with a foldable knife.
The sturdiest mushroom pickers enjoy various mushroom picking gadgets. These include, for example, an integrated brush for cleaning mushrooms or a foldaway scale for measuring the "catch". However, these are not essential for the recreational mushroom picker.
Even when mushroom picking, however, don't forget to wear the right outdoor equipment, appropriate clothing, map and plenty of fluids. It's easy to get lost in the hunt for mushrooms and lose track of time and space.
Don't be afraid to pack a larger knife with more versatile uses. Anything can still happen in the woods, and there's not much you can do with an ordinary mushroom knife in an emergency.
