Hydrophobization is the process of making materials repel water. This water-repellent property, known as hydrophobicity, is highly valued in outdoor gear such as footwear, clothing, and backpacks.
Water repellency is achieved using sprays, creams, or waxes. During production, special chemical additives or coatings may be applied. Users can also enhance water resistance by applying hydrophobic treatments at home.
Hydrophobization does not make a product fully waterproof. For complete protection, membranes or coatings are required. Still, hydrophobic treatment significantly improves comfort in damp environments.
