How can we distinguish the nations from each other ? By territory ? Location ? And what about by flag ? In addition to countries, the flags are also used by different organizations. What the flag actually is ? Practically it is a piece of fabric usually rectangular shape with different patterns, depictions or pressmarks. The flags are known since Ancient Egypt. Various objects were attached to the poles to distinguish different parts of Army. The oldest flag comes from China, dates to second century BC. So what are the main characteristics of the flag ?
Today´s flags usually have a rectangular shape. The aspect ratio varies, our Czech flag has a ratio of 2 : 3, while the United States flag 10 : 19. Despite the predominance of rectangles, there are exceptions, such as Vatican or Switzerland whose flags are of a square shape. The absolute extrem is flag of Nepal which has triangular shape ( combination of two single pennons). Either way, the symbols on the flag represent the country.
Although we may think that every nation has invented its own flag, we will be probably mistaken. A lot of flags are copied, with only colors changing. For example so-called Scandinavian cross which has been on Danish flag since Ancient times, served as a model for another Nordic countries. They adopted it and they are very proud of it. Similar with the French tricolor, which has been a pattern for flags of Italy, Belgium and others. So let´s not really look for crerativity and personality in flags, in the end, it is usually copy of some original version.
The flags are hanged up on the flagpoles or they can hang down in a vertical position. Such a hanging needs the means to be done.
