Do you remember those old fashioned water containers ? Those are canteens. Canteen is practically slang word for field bottle. Such canteens were carried by soldiers before CamelBack was invented. They come in different sizes ( 1L, 0.7 L, 0.5 L, etc.). Original designs were made of metal tin-plated steel. As much as we think it is a good material, that is not completely true. Sheet metal was too thin and it wears quickly. Either way, these canteens lasted for a long time. Over time, protective coatings of various materials started to be placed on them, which extended their lifespan. These canteens were gradually replaced with plastic ones. Plastic was more likeable. Corrrosion resistant, more flexible and mainly much cheaper and easier to make. That is why modern canteens are plastic. However, you can still find those old-fashioned sheet metal flasks which certainly have their charm.
We thought we all knew a bottle. Although modern ways and unconventional designs could convince us the opposite. We can have standard plastic bottles or sport bottle from famous brand. For those, who would like to try something different we have companies that are step ahead. Modern designs along with technologies guarantee perfect features and visual feast for the eyes. For example Nalgene bottles. They differ little bit from the other bottles, which is their beauty. For example, they offer various caps, even those with straws. In general, the company is trying to offer something different, but is it better? To perfectly answer this question, we propably need to purchase one of those bottles. So what's the deal with water bottles and canteens ?
