Protect your property from thieves

In every society there are people who do not recognize the right to private property – and thus like to appropriate other people's private property. They are called "thieves". Unfortunately, we cannot completely avoid them even in the 21st century. But the good news is that you can secure your apartment or house so that thieves have no chance. Or complicate their efforts to improve at your expense.

Think about prevention

When securing a house or apartment against thieves, it is definitely worth thinking ahead and taking certain preventive security measures before anything happens. The absolute cheapest solution is to have good relations with your neighbors. When you are not at home, the neighbors can continuously check to see if anything untoward is happening at your place. You don't even have to go on vacation. It is enough if you go for an evening visit to the family or "just" to work. So little is enough for the sticky-fingered to have it whitewashed... or rather cleaned out.

Good mechanical property protection is the basis.

We will talk about other preventive measures below. It can be mechanical window and door security, cameras or alarms, sometimes even connected to a central desk. It is this solution that pays off if you have something really valuable at home or if you live in an area with a higher level of crime and perhaps you have already been a victim of a burglary in the past.

Of course, you need to think not only about the house itself, but also about the adjacent outbuildings, garage and the like. So what measures should you take to have a more restful sleep and stay away from your home?

Mechanical protection is the basis

Naturally, mechanical property protection is the basis. This means not only that you lock up valuables. In more remote areas or in areas of the property where a thief could easily sneak in, window bars will also come in handy. Or at least external blinds (and when we are talking about them, they definitely look better than bars) or security films, which, although they won't prevent the glass from breaking, will at least deter thieves from continuing to break in. And the window locking handles will definitely come in handy too.

And when it comes to door security, the more you complicate the situation for thieves, the better off you will be – even in terms of future negotiations with the insurance company.

Doors are often the weakest link.

However, the mechanical protection of the door is essential - it is in many cases the weakest link. You can directly purchase a security door that is certified against various types of tampering and intrusion, but this is of course the most expensive solution. If you like your current door, you have gotten used to it and you would not like to change it, you can have it fitted with security locks. These can be not only mechanical, but nowadays also controlled via a mobile application and simply "smart".

As we have already said, if you have a house, you should protect not only the apartment itself, but also the surrounding areas, including cellars, attics, etc., from thieves. Safety fittings must also be installed on the doors leading to these spaces. And if these spaces are really remote, then we still recommend fitting the doors with bars.

Confounding the enemy

Other smart home accessories can include various light bulbs or sockets, which you can set to randomly turn on and off before leaving the house. Thanks to this, thieves will never be able to be sure if you are not really there, or if you are at home. You can again control some of these elements of the electrical installation using a mobile application and thus multiply the effect of "randomness" even more. For example, a radio can be connected to the smart socket, which will turn on and off at irregular intervals. And voices from within will discourage quite reliably.

If you live in an area with a higher crime rate, consider installing a camera system.

Equip the house with cameras

Especially in areas with a higher incidence of crime, it is advisable to think about a camera system. Sometimes only one camera at the entrance is enough, which can also have the function of a digital peephole, sometimes it is better to have the camera system designed by a professional. In any case, today there are cameras equipped with motion detection, and artificial intelligence can distinguish a person from a neighbor's cat, for example. You can be anywhere in the world and within a second you will receive a notification of suspicious movement on your mobile phone.

Other functions of some security cameras include two-way audio transmission. You can then talk to the intruder remotely from anywhere in the world. Believe us, this will discourage even the most stubborn. And a secondary practical function of such a solution is also the ability to talk to a welcome visitor or even a courier, who you can tell in real time where to put the package when you are not at home. And you can use the video recorded during a possible theft as evidence for the police and the insurance company.

The cameras can also be supplemented with an alarm, which in turn can be connected to the central protection desk. This is already a paid service, when in the event of a violation of the household or land, a private security agency will receive an echo and its workers will then come to check what is actually happening at your place. But pay attention to the correct installation – for example, a short circuit due to inflowing water can cause a false alarm, and this could ultimately cost you quite a lot due to the futile trips of the security agency.

Wait until you return from vacation before posting on social media.

Don't brag too much

Protect your property from the wider environment as a private thing. Sometimes it's hard not to brag, especially when you finally get something you've been dreaming about all your life. But if someone uninvited finds out about the fulfillment of your dream, then they can simply count one and one and come to the conclusion that it is probably not the only valuable thing you own. Naturally, you can't hide a more expensive car from envious people, but sharing a piece of jewelry worth thousands of dollars on social networks can be a bit redundant.

Then definitely don't brag on the networks that "we're going on vacation tomorrow", at least not in publicly accessible posts. Only share photos there after your return.

Check your insurance

Better to also review your home insurance and its coverage from time to time. Thieves can do a lot of damage even if they don't steal anything from you. They "just" somehow destroy the security features along the way. And, for example, replacing a cracked glass infill with a safety foil is not a completely cheap matter. And even such a "detail" should be part of your contract with the insurance company.
