LOWA was founded 101 years ago, in 1923, in the town of Jetzendorf an der Ilm, which is located near the Bavarian capital of Munich. This was at a time when good shoes were the most important and most used means of transportation.
It was founded by Lorenz Wagner, the son of a renowned shoemaker, successfully continuing the family tradition. And he wasn't alone, his two brothers – Hans and Adolf Wagner – threw themselves into the shoe business with equal vigor and built the Hanwag and Hochland brands. To this day, Hanwag is a brother brand for LOWA and at the same time a healthy rival.
Originally, this brand specialized in leather shoes suitable for everyday wear, but already during the 20s of the last century, it jumped on the booming mountaineering trend and ski and trekking boots were also added to its range – made from what else but leather. A slightly darker historical stage was the period of World War II, when LOWA produced footwear for the Wehrmacht's mountain units.
In the post-war period, when the company was not doing very well and its founder Lorenz Wagner died, former apprentice Josef Lederer appeared on the scene. With his wife Berti, daughter of Lorenzo Wagner, they breathed new life into the company. During this period, its current name LOWA was also created. The range of shoes was significantly expanded to meet the huge demand for shoes and the company was able to withstand the effects of the economic crisis.
When the company was bought by the Italian company Tecnica Group in 1993, the production of ski boots moved to Italy and the LOWA brand emerged as a manufacturer of outdoor footwear. In the course of decades, it developed herself to the very top of its field and, in close cooperation with well-known German climbers, wrote the history of footwear for alpine tourism on the European continent.
LOWA shoes are now sold in 80 countries around the world, and the Renegade model, an absolute bestseller in its time, is still a classic today.
For LOWA, sustainability is an integral part of the business model. If we want to spend our time actively in nature, it is important to pay attention to it. Reducing the burden on the environment, increasing ecological standards and taking responsibility for the entire supply chain are among the key topics. Sustainability is not just a word, it is a long-distance running. According to the company's philosophy, sustainable production is like a long trek where you have to go through many stages before reaching the top.
In the Rigad offer, you will find top outdoor, tactical and certified LOWA work boots. Tradition and many years of experience go hand in hand with innovation and modern materials. Therefore, today the upper material is far from being made up only of leather (e.g. hydrophobized nubuck, full-grain leather or hydrophobic split leather), but also e.g. suede and reinforced panels made of durable Cordura, on the inside of most models a Gore-Tex membrane is sewn.
The two-layer polyurethane midsole is enhanced with the unique Monowrap system, which sets LOWA apart from the competition. This is a special injection technology, the result of which is a better connection between the two parts, better damping and a longer service life. In different models, you will also come across different types of soles, such as high-quality Vibram, X-Trac Military or Z-Trac Tactical, but they always have a deep pattern, good grip on all types of surfaces, resistance to chemicals and good insulation from the cold and heat.
LOWA brand boots do not deny German precision and imagination. They are elaborated down to the smallest details, which will make putting them on and wearing them more pleasant. And they increase comfort. These interesting functional elements include e.g. effective ventilation and moisture removal system, loops for easier putting on, two-zone lacing with closed hooks, improved insole or anatomically shaped tongue with graduated stiffness.
Even the best shoe will not provide you with perfect comfort without the right socks. A bad sock can reliably kill the favorable microclimate inside the shoe. This can lead to the growth of bacteria or the formation of bruises and blisters. That is why LOWA socks optimally complement the range of footwear.
You can choose from models with an admixture of merino wool, which has naturally antibacterial properties. The socks have a minimum of seams, excellent moisture wicking and are reinforced in the area of the Achilles tendon. A compression version is also available, which helps optimal blood circulation and delays muscle fatigue.
LOWA shoe insoles are suitable not only as an additional layer of insulation for use in the cold months. They also increase the overall ergonomics of the shoe, maximizing wearing comfort. And as a result, they slow down the onset of foot fatigue during longer walks and all-day wear.
But LOWA does not only offer high-quality footwear for extreme conditions, but also a relatively wide portfolio of accessories and products for high-quality shoe care. Only proper care will ensure that the shoe will retain its optimal properties for many years.
