Is single tarp enough for sleeping in nature ?

Fans of tents are probably clear about this, but today we will focus on something else - whether the single tarp is sufficient for quality overnight stay in the forest.

It is definitely not the best idea to save on the quality of something as important and basic as tarpaulin.

One quality tarp is the basis !

Whatever type of tarpaulin you prefer, one quality tarp is basis that you should stick to.

Optimal size depends on specific requirements of each user so we can not for example say, that 2 x 3 m are the best dimensions. It always depends on particular use, number of users, place...

Why should I have two ?

First of all, the second one is usually smaller (and lighter), so it is easier to store.

But the main reason is, that single tarp is (usually) simply not enough. Unpredictable weather and thunderstorms, when the rain literally hits you "from every angle" (who has not experienced it will not believe..) may occur anytime, anywhere. And you will definitely agree, that it is much better to have two tarps than in the middle of the night think about how to re-organize your shelter to be protected from weather elements...

Another not negligible reason is better insulation. It is simply another insulating layer, that can be placed in between yourself and wind/cold/snow... It definitely works great as a windshield cover.

The other reason is simply the fact, that it is important to have some backup – the first (main) one may be damaged, stolen...

And let´s not forget another important fact, that from smaller tarps we can make many other things - improvised poncho, bag and there are some survivalist who don´t like to use standard backpacks ( the backpack itself can be quite heavy +/- 2-3 kg) as they can make improvised backpack from the tarp. Paradoxically, it is sometimes faster than long searching in backpack´s pockets.

We can make many things from paracord and tarpaulin.

Paracord for attachment ?

Even though we really like paracord for its multi-functionality, we have to point out that when it is really stongly tighten (even by the wind), it stretches, so don´t be surprised when your (apparently firmly fasten) shelter begins to break down after some time. So you should check it and possible use shortening knots (sheepshank).

Moreover, direct sunlight is not really good for nylon so for long-term use Dacron fiber is better choice.

Generally, all synthetic products don´t like frequent rubbing as it damages them (even tree for example), so in this case it is better to use the steel wire.

Conclusion

Today, we have not tried to convince you about our universal truth, but rather to give you more themes and motives to think about. Even survival is not about single always valid universal process, but about constant adaptations and ever-changing situations. And about their complete survival in the end...

The best what you can do is to realize your needs and respect them with the type of goods, that you need for survival activities. Of course you should also consider other factors as different people have different priorites and survival is no exception.

Please also evaluate your needs as realistically as you can. A man (and especially the human mind) is subject to many stimuli – other people opinions, advertising, political propaganda, … so be maximally honest with yourself. In the end, it is all about survival and not some drinking content.
