We can see increased activity during the spring months. They like warm (not hot) and humid conditions. Their overpopulation is primarily due to the mild winters, which are very common in recent years.

Ticks, as we know, spread dangerous diseases. It is mainly tick-borne encephalitis and lyme borreliosis. We have vaccination against tick-borne encephalitis, but not against lyme borreliosis. Both diseases can have dangerous process followed by chronic symptoms. While ticks are the main carriers, let´s look at some tips how to protect against them.

1. Increase attention in deciduous forests

Ticks can be found mostly in deciduous forests. Be especially carefull in humid conditions as the chances of encounter them are high.

As already mentioned, this also applies to city parks as well as other places. So after walking your dog, take a good look at your body as well as your animal friend body. Expect presence of ticks anywhere so you don´t regret it later on.

2. Proper clothing

Wear especially soft, light color fabric. Ticks are better visible on light colors so you can remove it straight away. Moreover, smooth fabric is more difficult for ticks to stay on.

3. Use a repellent

You can use repellents intended for ticks as well as other insect. However, for ticks it should be applied repeatedly for proper effect. The most vulnerable spots are from the knees down as the ticks don´t jump high but rather stay by the ground.

Mushroom pickers don´t like to hear this, but it is true. Ticks love tall grass and thick bush. So stay away from these places as much as you can.

6. Regular checking

It takes come time for tick to get to your clothes and then to you. You can eliminate the risk by regular checking of your clothes. Wearing light colors is an advantage.

7. Do not sit / lie on the ground

It is better to avoid sitting and lying down on the places where we expect increased activity of the ticks. If you are thinking about picnic, we advise places with low-mow grasses.
