Comparison of MOLLE, PALS, S.T.R.I.K.E.®, and ALP attachments

In the area of tactical equipment and backpacks, a key element is the so-called webbing system – a system that allows for attaching various pouches, holsters, or other accessories. We most commonly encounter four main types: MOLLE, PALS, S.T.R.I.K.E.®, and ALP. These systems are closely related and compatible with each other, but each has its specifics and advantages.

MOLLE – Modular Lightweight Load-carrying Equipment

This system is probably the most well-known. It was developed for the American military as a standard way to attach gear. However, MOLLE is not just the webbing, but the entire concept of modular equipment that uses PALS as its technical base.

Advantages:

  • Wide compatibility (NATO standard).
  • Availability of accessories from hundreds of manufacturers.
  • Robust and proven in combat conditions.
  • Compatibility with PALS, S.T.R.I.K.E.® and ALP.

❌ Disadvantages:

  • Sometimes tedious to thread the straps during assembly.
  • Worse horizontal mounting option.
  • If any of the straps are damaged, there is a risk of loss of fastening strength.

MOLLE binding excels in versatility and wide compatibility.

Laser Cut (Laser-Cut MOLLE / Laser-Cut Platform)

Laser Cut (sometimes referred to as Laser-Cut MOLLE or Laser-Cut Platform) is a modern method of creating modular webbing on gear, which differs from classic PALS or ALP straps. Instead of stitched textile straps, the entire webbing is precisely and cleanly cut with a laser into a solid sheet of fabric (most commonly laminated material, such as Cordura with reinforcement).

The advantage of this solution is very low weight, smooth surface, and modern aesthetics. Products with Laser Cut bonding appear compact and elegant and often tend to be less noticeable when moving in the field.

Laser Cut (sometimes referred to as Laser-Cut MOLLE or Laser-Cut Platform) is a modern way to create modular webbing on gear.

Benefits:

  • Low weight – eliminates the need for sewn-in straps, lightens the entire system.
  • Slim and clean profile – an advantage for plate carriers, backpacks and bags.
  • Modern look – often preferred from a design perspective.
  • Allows for various types of attachment (MOLLE, PALS) thanks to laser-cut holes.

❌ Disadvantages:

  • Lower mechanical strength – laser-cut material is not as durable as classic sewn-in straps.
  • In case of tensile damage, the material may tear.
  • Cheaper variants risk higher wear on the edges of the cutouts.
  • Requires high-quality laminated or reinforced material (e.g. CorPlus, Hypalon) – otherwise it loses its advantage.

PALS – Pouch Attachment Ladder System

This is a basic technical standard that forms a "ladder" of horizontal straps (width 2.54 cm) with regular vertical intervals. This layout serves as the basis for MOLLE and allows for the attachment of equipment by interweaving the straps.

Benefits:

  • Universal "grid" formed by horizontal straps.
  • System compatibility with all MOLLE components.
  • Jednoduchý, standardizovaný design.

❌ Disadvantages:

  • Does not allow direct horizontal mounting without an adapter.
  • Sewing to a precise grid limits placement variability.
  • When fully loaded, the straps may pull slightly.
  • It is not usable without separate equipment (design principle only).

S.T.R.I.K.E.® – commercial evolution of PALS by Blackhawk!®

S.T.R.I.K.E.® is an enhanced version of PALS, developed by the brand Blackhawk!®. Technically, it is fully compatible with MOLLE and PALS, but instead of the traditional webbing, it often utilizes a quick-release system (e.g., Speed Clips).

Benefits:

  • Compatible with MOLLE and PALS.
  • Uses quick-release buckles – faster attachment.
  • Elastic binding increases flexibility during movement.

❌ Disadvantages:

  • Bound to the Blackhawk!® brand.
  • The specific design may be more difficult to combine with lower quality MOLLE accessories.
  • Some older variants have lower resistance in extreme conditions.
  • Brand system – fewer manufacturers, higher price.

ALP – Advanced Load Platform

ALP is a system developed by some European manufacturers (e.g., in the Czech Republic) as an alternative to PALS. In addition to horizontal straps, it also adds vertical straps, which allows for fully variable gear attachment in both directions.

Advantages:

  • Full compatibility with PALS/MOLLE.
  • Allows you to attach gear vertically and horizontally.
  • High modularity and efficient use of space.

❌ Disadvantages:

  • Not as common as PALS/MOLLE (limited range of accessories).
  • More complex production = higher equipment price.
  • Type II (cross-link) may have poorer compatibility with some MOLLE accessories.

Summary and recommendations

All the mentioned systems are mutually compatible, but they differ in comfort of use, assembly speed, and variability. For maximum versatility, choose PALS or MOLLE webbing. Laser Cut is suitable for lightweight modern carriers. If you care about attachment speed and easy handling, opt for S.T.R.I.K.E.®. And if you need to attach gear not only vertically but also horizontally, then the ALP system will be the best choice for you.
