Stone paper

The so-called stone paper is a paper production technology, the primary component of which is not cellulose, but minerals. Specifically, calcium carbonate, which is supplemented with HDPE polyethylene (high-density polyethylene). It is a widely used polymer in the production of plastics.

Stone paper, developed in the late 1990s by the Taiwanese company Lung Meng Tech, is used to produce products that are subject to high demands in terms of durability. At first glance, stone paper pages in notebooks (because that is the use you will find most often) have a smoother surface than sheets of classic paper. That is why they are often used in designer products. However, the aforementioned resistance is also essential – stone paper is much more difficult to tear than ordinary cellulose paper.

You can write notes and sketch drawings on the stone paper in the same ways as on a regular pad of paper. The ink holds well on it, and if you have an important idea in your head that you need to get down on paper, and you don't have a pen or pencil at the same time, it doesn't matter at all – you can usually write on stone paper with sharp objects such as keys or nails.

Another advantage is the high resistance of stone paper to grease, dirt and water in various conditions, including snow. You can pack a notepad made of stone paper even in extreme conditions.

Compared to ordinary paper, the production of stone paper is also more ecological. No trees need to be cut down for it, and in addition, less water and overall energy is used in the production of stone paper. Of course, there is still a polyethylene component, which prevents the complete decomposition of stone paper in nature, but the mineral component, which makes up about 80% of the volume of stone paper, decomposes into mineral powder in a matter of months (with access to sunlight). However, according to the manufacturers, no harmful substances are released into the air when burning stone paper.
