Steel 5Cr15Mov

Steel 5Cr15Mov

This steel originates from China. It is a copy of the steel X50CrMoV15, which is produced in Germany. It is a type of steel that falls into the lower class. Nevertheless, it is used for knife production and is widely represented in the cutlery industry - especially concerning products originating from China.

Steel Composition

  • 0.5% carbon: improves hardness and resistance to wear and corrosion. A large amount of carbon reduces strength.
  • 15% chromium: for tensile strength and edge retention. Increases resistance to wear and also to corrosion.
  • 0.6% molybdenum: better machinability and strength.
  • 0.40% manganese: increases hardness
  • 0.10% vanadium: improves resistance to wear and hardenability.

The achieved hardness of 5Cr15Mov according to Rockwell reaches 54 HRC, which is categorized as steel with lower strength and hardness.

Properties

  • maintains sharp edges well
  • high resistance to corrosion
  • good resistance to wear
  • the steel is not too hard, so it is easy to sharpen

Applications

As already mentioned, this steel is most commonly encountered in the cutlery industry. This steel is used in the production of classic knives and kitchen knives. The biggest disadvantage is its low hardness.
