These ballistic inserts from the Czech brand Combat Systems are designed for plate carriers and ballistic vests, in this case for the Templar's Gear CIBV Cataphract ballistic vest, and fall into the category of so-called soft armor. Thanks to this, they can stop pistol-caliber bullets.
The advantage of so-called soft armor inserts is their high flexibility – these ballistic inserts adapt to the shape of the user's body. Meanwhile, they protect against pistol-caliber rounds (such as 9mm Luger, .44 Mag, or .357 Sig) and also against shrapnel.
The goal of Combat Systems' ballistic inserts is to minimize the secondary effect (trauma effect, i.e., vest deflection at the point of bullet impact) on the user's body. Primarily, however, it is essential that the ballistic inserts stop bullets from handguns that have high impact energy.
Combat Systems uses the best materials available on the market for manufacturing ballistic inserts. Specifically, laminates from American Honeywell, especially those based on UHMWPE from Spectra fiber. Combat Systems inserts do not need any additional materials to reduce trauma because the ballistic material itself reduces trauma excellently.
Combat Systems ballistic inserts go even further, beyond the American standard NIJ 0101.04, and because of this, they are capable of stopping bullets like Tokarev or Makarov. These are easily accessible yet dangerous. It is also noteworthy that the ballistic insert itself is enclosed in a waterproof cover and sealed using ultrasonic technology.
Combat Systems, of course, tested the effectiveness of their ballistic inserts with various types of bullets at different speeds. The following information about specific test parameters comes from their website:
The product is designed and manufactured exclusively for use in security forces (Police, Army, IRS units) or use by people involved in ensuring public order (Municipal Police, designated state reserves) or for personal self-defense.
