G-1000

G-1000 is a material you will primarily encounter with the Swedish company Fjällräven. They make their backpacks, jackets, and pants out of it. In short, they trust it so much that they include it in most of their products. What exactly is it?

Fjällräven refers to G-1000 as its basic material. They bet on it and evidently made a good choice since their products are successful almost worldwide. It is a dense fabric that consists of 65% polyester and 35% cotton. You can use it for outdoor gear, from arctic regions to the tropics, thanks to the treatment with so-called Greenland Wax (which you can also buy separately, even on Rigad.cz).

The Swedish manufacturer introduced the first variant of the G-1000 material as early as 1968. Since then, more versions have appeared on the market. Recently, eco-friendly versions of the G-1000 material have been gaining ground, for which Fjällräven uses recycled polyester and organic cotton. All variants of the G-1000 material share common features, namely a high level of durability and increased protection against ultraviolet (UV) radiation.

If the G-1000 material is protected with Greenland Wax, it will withstand even less favorable conditions. Most products made from G-1000 materials are pre-waxed, but naturally, the impregnation needs to be periodically renewed.

As already mentioned, the G-1000 fabric is highly durable regardless of the type. At the same time, it is very lightweight, making it ideal for outdoor clothing and gear. After impregnation with Greenland Wax, clothing made of G-1000 fabric is more resistant to external moisture. When wet, this material dries relatively quickly. However, the fabric remains breathable and effectively wicks moisture away from the body.

The G-1000 fabric has a dense weave, which also protects against mosquitoes and similar biting insects (except for the lightweight variant G-1000 Lite). And given its decent protection against UVA and UVB sunlight, the fabric also protects the wearer's skin from this harmful type of radiation.
