Polycarbonate

Polycarbonates belong to thermoplastic polymers or thermoplastics. They are easily processed, for example, by injection or hot pressing. They have good heat resistance, impact resistance, and good optical properties. Therefore, they are considered commodity plastics.

The name of polycarbonates is derived from the functional carbonate groups, which in their chain connect monomer units. Polycarbonate is used, for instance, as a material for the production of household and laboratory utensils, electronic devices, displays, lighting, etc. It is also the basic material for the production of compact disks and plastic bottles. Protective eyewear lenses, especially military ones with ballistic resistance, are predominantly made from polycarbonate. Polycarbonate sheets are also widely used in the construction industry. They are sold, for example, under the trade names Makrolon, Lexan, or Calibre.

Polycarbonate sheets are also worth mentioning. They are excellent materials for thermally insulating unbreakable glazing, lighting, and roofing. They are equipped with a protective layer against UV radiation, ensuring exceptional resistance to aging due to climatic conditions, providing long service life, ensuring the long-term preservation of optical properties, and helping to maintain high rigidity and load-bearing capacity. This layer is applied to one side of the sheets, which is clearly marked with a printed protective film. This side must always be installed facing outward.

Thanks to high impact toughness, polycarbonate sheets ensure high safety, eliminating the formation of shards and minimizing the risk of damage during transportation and installation. Polycarbonate cellular sheets can be installed flat or cold-bent. If the bending radius is not less than the recommended minimum radius, the bend does not adversely affect mechanical properties; on the contrary, the resulting arch increases load-bearing capacity.
