Teflon® Finish

The first to prepare it was chemist Roy J. Plunkett at DuPont. Polytetrafluoroethylene is more commonly known by its trade name teflon. Other trade names for polytetrafluoroethylene include Dyneon™ PTFE (formerly Hostaflon™) and Gore-Tex™ (PTFE membranes).

The most well-known example of PTFE usage is in the area of cookware. This primarily refers to non-stick pans. In industrial baking, these are professional baking sheets. Due to its slippery and anti-corrosive properties, PTFE is also used in the automotive industry and oil extraction for various threaded joints or other surfaces that need protection. In the textile industry, PTFE sleeves are applied to rollers, ensuring the slipperiness and non-stick properties of textile materials to the rollers. The non-stick PTFE layer is also used in the rubber industry for various molds. Typically, these are tire molds. PTFE products are used as seals, for example.

The pyrolysis of PTFE is detectable at 200°C. It produces several fluorinated gases that sublimate into the environment. Animal studies show the improbability of any significant health risk from these products at temperatures below 250°C. Fumes released from significant overheating of PTFE (beyond regular usage conditions) can cause "polymer fume fever" symptoms—flu-like symptoms that fade relatively quickly in humans but can be fatal for birds with very sensitive respiratory systems. Edible fats and oils used in kitchens start to smoke at about 200°C. The resulting smoke irritates the eyes, mucous membranes, and can potentially cause breathing difficulties. If the PTFE coating on the pan is not overheated "dry," the burning of frying fats timely indicates the risk of overheating the PTFE container. DuPont reports a relatively high degradation temperature for its non-stick coatings (260°C).

A special type of Teflon is the designation Finish. This material is added to clothing, making it water-repellent even during heavy rains. During your outdoor activities, you will therefore stay dry under any conditions.
