Bisphenol A (BPA) is an organic compound used in the production of some types of plastics, primarily polycarbonates. During the chemical reactions that occur during production, bisphenol is integrated into the plastic through chemical bonds, so it should not subsequently be released; however, it has been found that a small portion enters the food chain. For this reason, great effort has been made to determine the effects of bisphenol A on human health, confirming its negative effects. Thorough testing has identified hormonal effects of bisphenol A that can lead to health complications, but it was also confirmed that this applies only with significantly higher release rates of bisphenol. If the regulations for migration limits of this substance (released quantity) are adhered to in plastic products, there should be no health damage. Ultimately, it was decided for precautionary safety reasons to prohibit the use of plastics containing bisphenol A for the production of certain items, such as baby bottles or food packaging intended for children.
